In memoriam

We were saddened to hear of the passing of former Trustee Cheryl Dumont this past weekend. Cheryl was first elected to the Board of Trustees in 2010, and was re-elected in 2013 and 2017, serving until 2021 when she chose not to run again, devoting herself instead to adult learning as the executive director of St. Albert Further Education, and enabling her to spend more time with her family.
During her time on our board, she served as vice chair (2013-14 and 2016-17) as well as chair (2014-2015). She also served as trustee representative on a number of external organizations, including the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA), the Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta (PSBAA), the Further Education Council, the RCMP Advisory Committee and the Teacher’s Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA).
Additionally, she sat on a number of internal committees, including the board’s Advocacy Committee, ATA and CUPE negotiations committees, the Long Service Awards Committee and the Wisdom and Guidance Committee.
Cheryl was passionate about education at all levels, and was driven by what was best for the students in our care. She was committed to caring for all students, but particularly for those who struggled against circumstance, racism, inequity and prejudice. She was wise, kind and compassionate, and could always be found with a smile on her face and a warm hug for those who needed it. She was a driving force in our community and we, along with many others in our city, will miss her.
In honour of Cheryl, flags at our division office will be lowered.
